Oluchi Sandra Nwoko
Biography
Oluchi Sandra Nwoko (b.1995) is a visual artist living and working in Lagos. She has had an affinity for art
from a young age and in 2014, she obtained a bachelor's degree in Fine and Applied Arts from
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. She works with a variety of mediums focusing on acrylics. In her paintings, she creates characters and stories inspired by personal ideas and situations. Her works are characterised by bright and contrasting colours and focus on exploring self-perception, expectations and stories through faces, emotions and poses.
Nwoko believes art allows her to express herself deliberately and hopes people connect to her paintings
in their own different interpretations of her works. In 2022, she was part of the Genesis group exhibition at Okomoko Art Gallery, Lagos, and the Affirmation group exhibition by Vivid Exclusive Art Gallery, Lagos.
Artist Statement
Through painting, I create a space where my influences, beliefs and desires meet and find visual
expression. My work references memories of family and personal experiences which I explore with colourful palettes and posterised style compositions. I am fascinated by the capacity of faces, emotions and gestures to tell stories. My paintings are not about what appears on the surface; what I express is not just the person, a situation, or a feeling but an attempt to explore and capture what is real about them in my mind.
